Percentages and ROUND

Shares, discounts and tidy numbers

At closing time Maya drops the bun price by 20%. And she wonders: how much of a Saturday comes from lemonade?

A percentage is a part divided by the whole. $183 out of $672 is =183/672, which is 0.27. Format it as % and it shows 27%.

To take 20% off, multiply by (1 - 20%). Spreadsheets understand 20% as 0.2.

ROUND(number, digits) tidies the result: ROUND(2.7999, 2) gives 2.8. Use 0 digits for whole numbers.

=part/whole =price*(1-20%) =ROUND(number, 2)

Formatting to 2 decimals only changes what you see. ROUND changes the actual value.
